Instructions for authors

(Contributions of the Astronomical Observatory Skalnate Pleso)

1. General

Contributions of the Astronomical Observatory Skalnate Pleso are published by the Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The journal publishes scientific papers on selected aspects of astronomy and astrophysics. It is divided into three sections and a supplement. The following fields of astronomical research are covered: Interplanetary Matter, The Sun, Stellar Astrophysics.

The journal is issued three times a year (February, June and October). Manuscripts are received continually.

2. Rules

The papers submitted are the subject of an anonymous referee process. However, to shorten the referee process, the author(s) may propose up to five possible referees. At least four of these referees must not have the same affiliation as the author(s) and three of them must be from abroad. Of course, such a proposal need not be taken into account by the editorial board.

Submission of a paper implies that it presents original research which has not been published before and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.

3. Manuscript

To prepare a manuscript, authors are required to use the LATEX2E DocumentClass caosp.cls and to follow the instructions for preparing the manuscript demo_caosp.tex. In this file you can find detailed instructions on the figures, table layout, captions, labels, etc. Both the files can be downloaded from the server of the Astronomical Institute at Tatranska Lomnica. Electronic formats different from LATEX will not be accepted.

Authors are required to send the LATEX source file preferably via e-mail to the address: caosp@ta3.sk. If e-mail is not possible consult the editors: A.Skopal or R.Komzik (Astronomical Institute, SK-05960 Tatranska Lomnica, The Slovak Republic). Submission of the manuscript hard-copy (CAOSP-style referee option used) is welcome.

The figures should be in separate files and are required in the *.eps (encapsulated PostScript) format. The vector version of EPS format is required (the bitmap version can be used only in unavoidable cases and the executive editor must be consulted in advance). Coloured figures are excluded from the printing. The publisher provides an estimate of cost of half-tones printing on a special kind of paper (inserted pages) on request.

Papers must be written in English. As a rule papers are sent to a language corrector. The page charge of USD 2 per page is paid by the author in that case.

4. Page limits and format

Papers are limited to 30 pages.

Papers with extended tables are published in the supplement. The limit is 12 pages.

The editors welcome and accept review papers resulting from a recently defended PhD thesis. The supervisor's comments are required simultaneously with the referee process.

5. Page charge

No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions. The editorial board can introduce a page charge in the future for the authors not-affiliated to the Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The authors will be informed in advance.

This rule does not apply to the language check charges mentioned above.

6. Subscription

The Astronomical Institute is a non-profit organization. A subscription price covers only printing and postal expenses. The price is subject to change but is currently USD 16 per volume (2 regular numbers).

Conference proceedings can be published as special issues of the journal. They are not included in the yearly subscription.

7. Reprints

For each article 25 reprints and one copy of the issue are supplied free of charge. Additional off-prints (paid by the author) can be ordered when the paper is accepted.
