Peter,

SOT is planning on supporting all of the SOHO/SUMER campaigns during  
April so consider your program scheduled in week 15. The exact times  
of observation will presumably be relayed sometime closer to week 15.

Regarding your request for SOT observations, please note that the  
high cadence and FOV that you request can only be sustained for  
about  an hour due to on-board memory and telemetry restrictions. So  
in an optimal 7 hour period we may be able to run two high-cadence  
programs of about 1 hour duration each but no more than that. The FOV  
you request will be a 1kx2k pixel readout resulting in an exact FOV  
of 54" x 109" - I trust you won't miss those extra 6 arcseconds. If  
you have any other requests for coordination with SOT please email  
either myself or Takashi Sekii, the SOT science scheduling coordinators.

Dear Jan,

Your calculations are basically correct - it is difficult to run the  
SOT in uncompressed mode due to data rate restrictions. Instead, we  
have been running with 2-3 bit JPEG compression with very good  
results. This allows a 1k x 2k  FOV at 1x1 pixel resolution (ie.  
unsummed camera output) to run at 60 seconds cadence for several  
hours. Perhaps not as long as five hours as that depends somewhat on  
the telemetry pass schedule. Also, if you can tolerate 2x2 summing  
(0.108" pixels in the BFI) you can definitely get 5 hours of  
uninterrupted observations at 1k x 2k FOV. Actually in this case we'd  
probably run a 2k x 2k FOV that would produce 1k x 1k images of the  
109" x 109" FOV.

SOT has in the past provided multi-hour continuous stretches of  
observations for coordinated observing, although at present we are in  
eclipse season and the longest uninterrupted observations are only  
about an hour. By August we'll be out of eclipse though and we should  
be able to accommodate your request.

The next step is for you to submit a proposal to me which I will  
present to the Science Scheduling Coordinators meeting in June. Your  
proposal should include a brief science justification followed by  
specific observing requirements for the Hinode instruments. I've  
attached a Latex template for making Hinode observing proposals. This  
is only a guideline so feel free to develop your own proposal outline  
if this one doesn't fit.

Thank you for submitting the proposal. It will be discussed during  
the June SSC meeting. We will strive to schedule your request during  
the period of something like 15-31 August. I must remind you that in  
the case of a major flaring active region on the disk, SOT reserves  
the right to forgo any quiet Sun/network observations that may have  
been previously scheduled. But other than that restriction, we should  
be able to coordinate with the DOT during the above dates.

Hello,

Actually there is a web page which has the Hinode pointing (which is 
the center of the SOT FOV) as soon as it decided in the daily meeting.

See the Hinode Daily Events page at, for example:

Every day except Sunday, the bottom of this page has a link to the 
pointing file, if the pointing has been selected yet.  Today's file 
is:

In this file, the column of coordinates below "/* Memory upload :" 
show the pointing coordinates at the start of each pointing.  If the 
tracking number is 0, then pointing is fixed at these coordinates; if 
it is 1-4, then the pointing will continuously follow solar rotation.

You can also find a pointing file now for Tuesday 20070807.  These 
coordinates were chosen this morning, but they may be modified in the 
daily meeting Tu morning at 01:30 UT.  Usually any such last minute 
modifications are fine tuning in the same target region.

Each pointing file ends with 24 hours pointing at disk center called 
the backup plan; ignore this, it will only take effect if the next 
day's plan can't be uplinked for some reason.

Dear Sigrid and Jan,

I am one of the Hinode SOT Chief Observers during your upcoming HOP 20 
campaign and I wanted to confirm with you that we will support HOP 20 
starting with observations on Saturday, 8/18.

The SOT observations you requested were for Ca H, Gband, and 6302 
magnetograms, 2Kx2K field of view (~109"x109"), binned 2x2 (to 1kx1k 
final size) at 30 second cadence per wavelength (10 sec between 
images). We will try to accomodate this but may have to increase the 
cadence depending on telemetry restrictions.

Please send your targeting information to sot_co@solar.isas.jaxa.jp 
(include "sot_co:" in the subject line, as in this message).  We will 
need both Saturday and Sunday target pointing before 10 AM JST (01:00 
UT) Friday.

Dear Sigird,

We would like Monday's pointing information on Saturday, if possible. 
People in Japan take Sunday's rest very seriously. During the week, we 
construct our observing plans the day before observations. There are 
no spacecraft uploads on Sunday, though, so we plan for two days (Sat 
& Sun) on Friday and one day (Mon) on Saturday.

Hi Astrid,

I'm very sorry. I meant when you do provide pointing information, we 
would like to shift the image on our CCD. It's an internal shift but 
it is something you should be aware of for accurate alignment of data 
from several instuments.

However, I made an error in timing. Please send your pointing 
information to us *two* days before your observations (not the day 
before). Hinode's observing day starts at 11 UT. Infomation we have by 
1 UT on the 17th can be included in the observations starting at 11 UT 
on the 18th. So, please send your pointing information for both 8/18 
and 8/19 by 01:00 UT.

Also, note that the field of view for your data will be centered 10 
arcsec west of disk center and the best cadence we could get in our

Hi Astrid,

Regarding your question below, yes, all three Hinode instruments plan 
observations on the same schedule. In the observations we have running 
over the weekend, EIS and SOT are co-pointed but the the center of the 
109"x109" SOT images will be 10" west of the EIS FOV center.

The *.gif files at https://sot.lmsal.com/operations/timeline/ is a 
good graphical representation of our daily plans, including pointing. 
There are other details about the observations there, too.
